And your piercer would tell you instructions on how to take care of it and how long it will take to heal.
Your piercer will put a stud/barbell that's long enough to give your tongue room to swell. It will swell a lot but it will heal pretty fast (About 4 to 8 weeks). The swelling should go away in about 7 days or so.
While it's healing, you need to rinse your mouth every time after you eat, preferably with mouthwash that does not contain alcohol [Crest Pro-Health was what I used when I had my lip pierced] After it's healed, you should rinse 2 times a day. And while it's healing, avoid foods that are hot, spicy, sour, etc because it will slow down your healing process...and not to mention that they'll burn. To speed up your healing process, rinse your mouth 1-2 times a day with salt water solution [1 part salt and 8 parts water. Make sure you use no more salt than that because it will only irritate the piercing. Also, make sure your salt is 100% sea salt. And do NOT do this more than twice a day because it will again, irritate the piercing and slow down the healing process]
Do not smoke, drink alcohol or coffee while it's healing by the way.
