All the way or the easy way?

Question Posted Tuesday August 28 2007, 7:59 pm

I have just begun my freshman year of college. I have 8 years of school ahead of me, four of which will be at med school, considering I can get in.

At my college, they pair you up with a roommate with some of the same interests. Both my roommate and I had plans to be veterinarians. Yesterday, my roommate decided she didn't feel like going to school for 8 years and is going to be just a veterinary technician instead. It shocked me because she is smart, gets wonderful grades, and has an awesome scholarship, only for her to drop out and go to community college! (Nothing against community college, of course.)

I don't really care what my roommate does, it's her life and I hardly know her anyway. Her decision just made me think. I, myself have always been ambitious. If I start something, I'm going to finish, all the way. And I guess I can't understand why other people wouldn't feel that way. Why would someone want to take the easy way out? Why settle for anything less, especially if you are so smart and successful to being with?

I just wanted to get some other opinions on the subject.

Hello! I am only still in High School- but I, too have many years of college ahead of me. I'm wanting to go into the medical field- and I've always thought of myself as an ambitious person. I currently have a 4.0 and I'm trying to become my class Valedictorian. I, like you, finish something when I start it.

Some people I guess figure that its too much work, whether they know they can do it or not. I am not sure, really, because I'm just as baffled as you. I guess that when your like me and you- its hard to just "give up" on something you've got the potential to succeed in. Maybe her dream changed? Maybe talk to her if you really want to know- but I guess the real reason that I'm answering this is because I'm just letting you know that you're not alone- and that you should continue to go all the way and keep chasing your dream =D.
