The Facebook default is that anyone can message you, even if they can't see your profile.
So if you don't want random people messaging you, do this:
1. Go to the Search section of the Privacy page. (The Privacy link is at the top of the page between Account and Logout)
2. Under the "What Can People Do With My Search Results" section, uncheck the box next to "Send you a message."

That way, when people search for you, the option to message you isn't there, and the only way they could would be if they were your friend!

Hope this helped! :]
