gymnastics

Question Posted Wednesday May 16 2007, 1:30 am

ok i am 14 years old and i was wondering is it too late to get back into gymnastics. the last time i was in gymnastics i was around 7 and i was really good but then i stopped and i lost all my flexibility. but i taught myself how to do a back bend again in under a day and i can almost do a split again. but the deal is i am wayyyy out of shape. so yea im wordering with me being out of shape and my weight can i still get back into gymnastics again eventhough i learn quickly and i am still kind of flexible. thanks!

Look, it really depends on what level you want to perform at. Of course you are not too old to practice gymnastics. You can undoubtedly also become good (again). It would be misleading to say however, that you can achieve anything within that field. Female gymnasts tend to peak at around your age.

Take a soccer player as an example. If he takes a break during his 20s and then starts up again in early 30s he will never be a pro. He is taking up the sport a few years before the pros usually retire. That being said, he can still become a very good soccer player.

So, if you enjoy it, then by all means do it. If you put some effort into it, I think you will very quickly relearn the things you once knew. It sounds like you are a natural at it (and shape can be regained fairly quickly). I see no reason why, at 14, you should not be able to take gymnastics as a hobby and become good at it.
