If you're cashing a check at a gas station, make the check out to the gas station. For example, if you want to cash a check at Exxon, make the check payable to Exxon in the amount you need.
After the gas station gives you the cash, they bring the check to the gas station's bank. From there, their bank draws money from your account and puts it in the gas station's account.
The only way just ANYONE could cash your check and get personal money for the check is if you make the check payable to cash. YOU SHOULD ONLY MAKE CHECKS PAYABLE TO CASH AT YOUR BANK. ]
