Driving

Question Posted Monday March 26 2007, 9:17 pm

so im going for my driving test soon. i get really worked up and nervous when i drive. well, i should change that, when i park. im just not a great parallel parker and i know that's a big part of the test. i shouldn't get down on myself, because i only really tried once with garabage cans. i just get too worked up. im not a fan of driving and i dont really like it. i see it as extremely dangerous and not something for me. i know its a privledge to have a license but almost everyone in my grade has theirs [im 17 btw]. if you don't, they're like "uhh..you dont have your license?" idk it just seems like a huge thing here or maybe every where. i know its important to drive, but i dont want to feel rushed and i do feel rushed because your permit expires in a year, which might seem like a long time but it isnt for a person who has a hard time with it because of their nerves. any advice or tips?? thanks!!

i sort of had the same problem (still do - i have very little driving experience even though i have a lisence, and every time i'm at the wheel i feel very anxious and alert.)
first of all, try not to worry about the peer pressure so much. who cares what they think, if they believe that a driver's lisence is just about the prestiege, then those people aren't worth even talking to. getting your lisence is about responsibility and necessity. try to think - when are you going to absolutely have to drive? now work with that deadline, instead of one year - permits can be easily renewed.
now about anxiety. whenever you sit down at the wheel, just try to relax. check yourself every now and then to make sure that your muscles aren't stiff, that your neck and shoulders aren't tight. take deep breaths whenever you feel really nervous. always practice with someone who you feel safe around - if your parents have a tendency to make you nervous (i know my dad does), try to find someone else who could help you instead; someone who will notice that you're beginning to freak out and check you by saying "relax, it's okay, take a deep breath", and who won't yell at you "watch that car, watch that car!!!!"
as for parallel parking - just practice some more with garbage cans until you feel like you can do it. don't worry, the more you practice driving, the safer and the more relaxed you feel doing it. once it's an automatic skill (and it will become automatic once you've practiced enough), it'll feel perfectly fine.
good luck! =)
