alright, so i just watched the grudge and i missed some parts so i dont really get it. can someone just explain to me like the story? including all the parts you like find out at the end. thanks! :)
The three people who originally lived in the house were a husband, wife and child. The wife is secretly in love with Peter (Bill Pullman). She becomes obsessed with him and starts writing about him in her journal and sending him letters. The journal is then found by her husband, who kills her in a rage. The husband also trys to kill the boy in the bathtub and then the hangs himself in a bedroom.
Peter is a teacher at a school and is constantly receiving the letters from someone he doesn't know (they are from the woman who is stalking him). After getting so many, he decides to visit the sender and uses the return address on the letter to find the house. Upon arriving, he hears a noise. He walks around the outside of the house and finds the boy in bad condition looking out a window. Peter enters the house and decides to stay with the boy until his parents come home. Peter searches the house and finds the journal that has "Peter" written all over it and pictures with himself in them. He looks and sees blood on the closet door and when he opens it finds the dead wife. Peter leaves the house and the next day falls off the side of a building and dies (detectives say he jumped, but it really could be the ghosts that made him fall).
This is where, to me, it got a little confusing as to what happened when. Enter the Williams family--Matt (William Mapother), Jennifer (Clea DuVall), Susan (KaDee Strickland), and Emma (Grace Zabriskie). They move into the house and hire a girl named Yoko to care for Emma. While walking around the house, Yoko discovers the closet where the wife was killed. When she opens it and goes up into the removes ceiling area, she is killed by the ghost of the wife. Since the family thinks Yoko didn't show up, Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) takes the position to take care of Emma. Karen is in Tokyo with her boyfriend Doug (Jason Behr).
Matt goes into Jennifer's bedroom to talk and she looks to be in a confused/shocked state. He starts to get scared and then the ghost of the boy appears, Matt and Jennifer die, and their bodies are hid in the attic along with Yoko's. Karen goes into Emma's room to see she also looks to be in a confused/shocked state. A ghost appears but does not kill Karen and when the police arrive, Karen is taken to the hospital and the paramedics say that Emma died of some sort of natural ailment.
At the same time as all of that, Susan is still at work. She calls the house but of course since all the characters are in trouble, no one is able to answer. Susan decides to leave but when she goes to the stairs the lights start to flicker and she sees something flash by. Her cell phone rings and the caller ID says it is Matt. When she answers all that comes up is a low, scary voice tone. She gets scared and when the exits the stairs and closes the door she sees one of the ghosts. She rushes to the security area and asks the guard to investigate the stairs. She watches the guard from a survaliance camera and when the guard leaves, a ghost appears on the camera. Susan leaves her work building and goes home. When she gets to her apartment, the phone rings. It is the voice of Matt (who we know has already been killed by the ghost of the boy). He asks which apartment Susan is in and she answers. Seconds later the doorbell rings and when Susan looks in the peephole, it is Matt. She opens the door and begins to say "how did you get up here so fast" but Matt isn't there. Lights flicker and all that and she gets scared and goes to her bed. She heard the low, scary voice tone again and sees something is at the end of her bed and going under the sheets towards her. She looks, it is the ghost, and she is dead.
The police are now back at the house and have just had Karen taken to the hospital. They go to the answering machine and see there is one message. The message is the one from Susan that everyone missed. Since Emma is dead and Matt and Jennifer are missing, they decide to go get Susan. The police search the house more and find Yoko, Matt, and Jennifer dead in the attic and the police who went to go get Susan said that she wasn't in her apartment but it was locked from the inside...hmm...
When Karen awakes in the hospital her boyfriend, Doug, tells her that Emma died and what had happened. Karen then goes on a research spree and meets with Peter's wife. When she looks at some pictures she sees that the same Japanese woman appears in each one. She also talks with the investigator who found the bodies of Matt, Yoko, and Jennifer in the attic. The investigator tells her the story of the original murders of the house and that Peter committed suicide the day after them.
The investigator decides that he should go and burn down the house since everyone who has been in it so far has died (including some of the investigator's friends). Before the investigator can dump the gasoline and burn the place, he hears a noise, investigates, and is killed by a ghost.
While Karen went out to research about the house and talk to the investigator, Doug became worried about her. He leaves her a message that he is going to go find her at the house (the haunted one, but he doesn't know this). Before Karen can get to him, he already goes to the house and (off-screen) is attacked by a ghost.
Karen gets his message and hurries over to the haunted house to stop him. When she gets there she sees the gasoline containers on the floor but no one there. When she goes upstairs, the ghosts show her what really happened in the house (the first paragraph of this summary). Everything then shifts back to reality and when she goes back towards the door, she sees a ghost flash by in the mirror. A hand clamps down on her foot and she sees it is an injured Doug. She tries to drag him to the door to escape when the ghost of the dead wife starts crawling down the stairs towards them. Before they can get out, the ghost grabs Doug and he goes into the same confused/shocked state that Emma and Jennifer went in previously in the movie. He dies and when Karen tries to get out a ghost appears in the door. She quickly closes it and then all of a sudden things seem normal again...but they are not. Things start shaking, sounds and creaks enter the room, and Karen becomes very scared. She crawls over to Doug's body and then sees the gasoline again. She kicks it over and it spills out. She then takes a lighter out of Doug's jacket and gets it going. Before she can throw it, a hand grabs hers and stops her. When she looks down she sees instead of Dougs body she is holding the body of the dead wife ghost. Karen still manages to toss in the lighter and the house begins to go up in flames.
Cut to a hospital-like place where Doug is dead under a sheet and investigators are talking about the house. They say that the girl from the house (Karen) survived and that firefighters were able to stop the fire and save the house (uh-oh). Karen is taken in to see her boyfriend's body one last time. Things though start to get a little weird and a ghost arm flaps out the side of the sheet. All of a sudden though Karen looks again to see it is just Doug's charred arm. Karen then hears the low, scary voice tone (almost like a croaking type noise), turns around and it is the ghost and the movie ends. [ xWACKYJACKIEx's advice column | Ask xWACKYJACKIEx A Question ]
