Confused

There's this guy that I've liked for 1-2 years or so, not continuosly though. However, there are his friends, who tell me he will never like me, that he prefers [whatever] kind of girl. I'm not really willing to change myself for him, because that's being a fake, and I'm pretty sure not a lot of guys like those kind of girls. At times the guy also hints at me that he likes me. Although there are much more possibilities that make them not-hints.
So there's 2 of his friends, one will be A another friend will be B and my crush will be C. A tells me to go tell C I like him, I'm not entirely sure why he wants me to do so, either that I do have a chance with C or he's doing it for laughs. He also has weird ideas of setting me up with C, that I'm not very fond of, though I'm sure those are mostly for laughs. Then there's B, who's like somewhat closer to C, I guess, who tells me that it would be awkward if I did tell C I like him or C will reject me (I can really see that happening).
I'm really terrified of rejection.

Just tell him. The worst he can say is that he doesn't like you back. Rejection isn't as bad as you think. It lets you know who you have a chance with.
