Ripped/Distressed Jeans

How can you make your own ripped or distressed jeans so that there are still strings holding the rip together still?

ptu somthing int eh pant leg so that wheny ou do this, you dont do both sides..
tehn get..
somthing sharp

i just cut a slit across the knee and wash them. my strings stay there and still connect the hole. But just cut the line a little messy, not just a straight line.
