Physically healthy, yes. Mentally healthy, no?

Question Posted Wednesday January 17 2007, 11:11 pm

15/f

Hi, I'm not trying to lose more than a pound or two, if anything. But I would like to study how many calories I'm taking in and how many I'm burning. I am considering getting a pedometre, scale and book to write down everything I eat. I realize it's probably good to see exactly what I'm eating and what not, but is it mentally healthy for a teenager to be so aware of their health? I am just over 5'8 and around 115 lbs, so I'm not having any issues.

Thanks!
PS: I have a lot of spare time and this interests me, haha.

First off, I think that its perfectly normal to be aware of your health, and I dont think that you need to lose wieght.
But, I do think that its a good idea even if you dont need to lose wieght, to figure out what your diet is really like. For that, I would highly suggest www.mypyramidtracker.gov , all you do is create an account, and every day enter in what foods you have eaten (include everything) and at the end of a set number of days, it gives you a sheet of the percents of all nutrients, fats, carbs, ptotiens, vitamins, ect.that are in your diet, and suggestions on how to get more of what you lack. Its fairly user freindly, and free.
Hope this helps.

First of all, you don't need to lose a pound or two. If anything, you're UNDER weight. Your BMI(body mass index), going off what you have said, is 17.5. To be healthy you should be 18.5 at the lowest...if anything you should attempt gaining a few Ibs. I think every teenage girl worries about her weight, I've never met one who doesn't(at least a little). You don't need to keep track of how many calories you are consuming/burning....I don't think its healthy. Usually people keep track of calories to lose weight, so I don't see why you would need to. =[ I think its good to be aware of your health, which is exactly why you might want to gain a few Ibs.

So to sum it up, no I don't think it would be healthy for you to do that. Be aware without being overly aware.

You aren't trying to lose weight, so I think you are fine. It shows a healthy interest in your body. Knowing what you are doing right is just as important as knowing what you are doing wrong. This would also show you if your calories are really the right ones, or if you could do with a healthier diet that has the same amount of calories. However, I would recommend talking to your doctor to get his/her recommendations on the best way to use this information.
