the point is:
they feel uncomfortable being commited, they dont like being commited, they 'somehow' fell out of love with you +etc.
all together
they're breaking up with you it's like a pick-up line people use to not hurt your feelings, but it doesnt succeed because breaking up kills the human soul.

either the person who wants to take a break wants to break up with you for good and doesnt want to be harsh and hurt you or they think they want to be serious with you but wan to make sure by seeing how strong their feelings for you are by going with others to see if they experience the same type of feelings with them or theyve spotted some one else and want to have fun with that person while still keeping their foot on you.

i guess there isn't much of a point, because generally when people want to 'take a break', they want to break up all together.

That aside, people take breaks for different reasons, to test there relationship, to see other people etc etc. But generally speaking, it's because they're nt sure they want to stay with their current boyfriend/girlfriend or not.
