One thing that works well is pre-natal vitamins. You can get them over the counter at most pharmacies. After taking them for a month or so, you will be suprised at how much shinier your hair is and how much it's grown. Same for your finger nails.
Another trick I learned from a hairdresser is getting plenty of sunlight. Apparently UV-B rays make your hair grow faster. A tanning bed will work too. Personally, I don't recommend the UV-B method because of the damage to your skin - but it's your call.
