Question Posted Saturday October 14 2006, 12:07 pm

Does anyone know what the rings around Zimbabwe's woman's necks are called, if called anything. Also, do you know why?

isis answered Saturday October 14 2006, 2:46 pm:
The neck rings are called Idzila, they were worn by married women of the Ndebele tribe as a sign of status, they would remove them if their husband died. The more rings they wore the wealthier their husbands were.
They were also known to wear isigolwani rings which are made of twisted grass and decorated with beads, mostly for ceremonial purposes. They would also wear both these types of rings around their legs and arms. The practice of wearing Idzilas is dying out and so are not worn every day now.
Hope that helps.
