Maybe ask him an innocent question, a safe topic like " what was the homework?" or "Do we have aa quiz in English?"
or something along those lines. But perhaps before even then, if he's in any of your classes, before asking him one of those questions try " Hey, you're in my ____ class right?" and if he replies yes, proceed to ask his name and any question relating to the class. Then Bingo, he knows your name and he knows you. Do this often, not too often though or he might think your stupid and ditzy.
