this is gonna sound really dumb..buti thought it would be cool to try this
theres this guy that im friends with and i kinda like him and maybe wanna be more then "just friends" but he doesnt want a girlfriend right now and he wants to see if i'm girlfriend material or something but it's kinda hard to be like just friends..

Its not dumb, its a good question. It sounds to me hes just looking at his options and putting them into thought. Has he had a recent relationship and if so did it take a big toll on him. As for you being friends with him, I know its hard but you need to until he makes his desicion. Don't force him into anything or it might push him away. How long have you been waiting?
