xldywing answered Monday July 31 2006, 7:04 pm: great question! hot water only flows out of the hot water tank when cold water flows in. when someone flushes the toilet, the overall water pressure is reduced. if you water input is strong enough, you should have enough extra water to continue the cold water stream to your toilet AND the shower. but if your water pressure is low, when someone flushes the toilet, the cold water will divide in half and you'll end up with hot water and not enough cold to counter it. if you want to fix this, you can change your feed pipes or you can turn down the hot water heater so when you take a shower, you only need to use hot water and not add cold water to make it cooler. that's about it!
