Black smoke typically indicates a rich mixture, meaning too much fuel to too little air.
With fuel injection, there are a few different possible causes:
Ignition computer keeping the injector open too long.
Oxygen sensor needs to be replaced. (Most likely cause, and cheapest fix)
Timing off, so fuel isn't completely burned.
If there is a turbo, or super-charger that complicates things.
Now if you have blue smoke... (look carefully while it is light out) there is oil in the fuel. That indicates a mechanical malfunction which is allowing oil to be burned with the fuel.
