in love with someone that i dont even know

Question Posted Thursday June 15 2006, 2:46 pm

Okay...this is a really stupid question/scenario. Alright so I am in love with this guy...except I don't even know him! He is an actor who played in this movie called "The Outsiders." He plays a guy named Sodapop Curtis. The guy he plays (im in love with the character..not even the actor!) is so sweet, loving, caring, funny, and seriously the cutest guy I have ever seen! I like actually cry over him knowing he's just a character in a movie and I'll never get to meet him because he is not even real! Here is a picture of him:

That's also not a very good picture of him and he looks cute! The actors name in Rob Lowe and Im 13/F btw. Is there something wrong with me? Do I have to see a phsyciatrist?

I have seen the movie and read the book, its good. Heres what I think, crying over a fictional character is a bit extreme. There are many people who obsess over people they don't even know, but even though it is common it is not healthy. Obsession of any kind is not healthy. It sounds like you recognize that there is a problem here and you no longer wish to have this obession. Thats a good start. I don't think that you need to see a psychiatrist yet, but if it starts to interfere with your daily life then, yes you might think about getting some help.

You are 13 years old, you have a LOT of hormones running through you right now and girls at your age do tend to go a bit boy crazy, I was too. I think that you need to realize that there are guys like Sodapop out there in real life, they are few and far between, but they are out there. You can meet and fall in "love" with your very own soda. You might try to find a replacement of sorts, try to meet new people this summer. All I can tell you that you are probably not really in love with Sodapop. You are probably infatuated. The good news is that infatuation goes away. The bad news is there is no telling when it will and it feels like it never will. I was infatuated with a guy I didn't know a little while ago, but I have since grown out of it. You need to focus your sexual and romantic energy elsewhere (meeting a new bot, etc.). This obsession is not healthy. If you really feel that you need to see a psychiatrist and that this is inturrupting your life and your thoughts to an extreme degree then it might not be such a bad idea, it may be good for you to be able to understand the reason why you have an obession with a character. I do not know you're personal situation so I can't tell you how to solve your problem completely. I have given the suggestions that I can think of. It isn't nessicary yet to see a psychiatrist, but if the infatuation grows then it is a good idea to maybe go to one for a while. There is no shame in it. Good Luck and I hope I helped. If you have any other questions or concerns don't be afraid to ask another question or email me. I'll be glad to help.

Love, Rainbow
