razor burn: how can I prevent the bumps?

Question Posted Tuesday June 13 2006, 12:20 am

uhhh hi yeah im 15. & it drives me insane to not have my vagina completely shaved...especially when it comes to sexual activity...but basically whenever i DO shave i get really intense razor burn. i use an intuition razor AND skintimate shaving gel but it always seems to get really bad...how can i prevent the bumps from getting so horrible? and also is there something wrong that i get them so badly?

and there's one more thing...the guy im seeing keeps telling me he wants to eat me out. i definetly want to experiment with him and it sounds fun, but im kind of self consious. im afraid he'll go down on me..and it won't be good enough? i dont know exactly..but should i be scared? also, im very sexually active and normally confident with my body. thankkkk you =]

Okay. Some tips to help with razor burn: make sure you're using a new razor. This means it'll be at its sharpest, and this will reduce the number of times you need to slide it over your skin. The skin under your pubic hair is very, very sensitive - it's best to only sweep the razor once over the area rather than keeping going on to make sure you get all the hairs. This might mean it takes a couple of days to get it completely shaved, but it's more gentle for your skin.

You also will want to shave in a downwards direction; this is the direction the hair grows and will lessen the chance of infected or irritated hair folicles.

Another option is waxing. This can be uncomfortable, but will get rid of your hair for a number of weeks - without shaving.

Now onto the next part of the question! If you've never been eaten out before, it's understandable to feel nervous. But if your partner is really interested in doing this, it means that he isn't sharing this uncomfortableness - in fact, he's eager to please you.

Make sure you are regularly washing the area around your vagina (not inside the vagina itself, as this is self-cleaning!) with a soap for sensitive skin. Also, be clear in your head about whether you want to try this or not. If you do, you can let your partner know you're feeling a little worried, and this will let him know to try to make sure you feel comfortable.

You can also let him know what's working and what isn't - this is doing a favour to you both.

If this is something you'd like to try, then think carefully about what would make you more comfortable and go for it.

Do remember that if you haven't been tested for possible sexually transmitted infections, you CAN pass one on to your partner through oral sex. This can be prevented by using a dental dam (a rectangle of latex) or by cutting a condom in half and laying it over your vagina.

Best of luck.
