I'm doing a report for my biology class. I don't understand the concept of the immune system. Well, i understand what it does. It is an organ? What relashionshiop does it have to white blood cells?

hey! alright basically your immune system is what protects you from viruses and bacteria and keeps you from getting sick! i got this list off a website, and these are all parts of the immune system:
* The skin outside the body and other lining tissues inside forming a barrier
* Mucus lining of the gut and lungs which traps invading bacteria
* Hairs which move the mucus and trapped bacteria out of the lungs
* Stomach acid which kills bacteria that have been swallowed
* Helpful bacteria growing in the bowel which prevent other bacteria from taking over
* Urine flow which flushes bacteria out of the bladder and urethra
* White blood cells called 'neutrophils' which can find and kill bacteria and other infectious agents
this is what the white blood cells do... and they are part of the immune system:
* Move to sites of infection in the body
* Stick to invading bacteria or fungi
* Swallow up the invader
* Kill the bacteria they have swallowed with chemicals
one simple example (and it is pretty gross, sorry) of how white blood cells work has to do with pimples. a pore on your face gets clogged and usually infected... this is when you feel a pimple coming on, and it feels tender and looks red. as soon as this happens, the white blood cells know this is happening and they rush to the area to kill bacteria and stop the infection. this is when the pimple becomes a bump... and yes, the white stuff in the pimple are the white blood cells!
hope this helps! if you need more help just google "white blood cells immune system" and you should get a lot of helpful websites! :) ]
