Well, aside from my job, I have two ways of making money on the side:

#1: I repair console gaming systems. I have an ad up at work with a phone number, and people can just drop off their PS2s and NES systems and whatnot for me to pick up there at work. Is there any little random thing you know how to repair or build? Find somewhere to advertise this skill.

#2: eBay. There's a small store here in town that buys and sells used games for any system. I visit it at least once a week, and look for anything rare. I can find a rare PS1 game for $4 and resell it for $40 sometimes. You could try pawn shops and look for rarities. Do a little online research first so you know what to look for.

As for investments...that's all long term. Buy some bonds and you can't expect to see income from that for a good 10 years. If you can't afford to give out that money right now, there's no point anyway. I've always preferred short-term, quick cash. It may not be much, but it adds up.

When I get fast food, or pay for anything with cash, I give that extra dollar so I can get some loose change back. I keep this change in the ashtray of my car (I don't smoke, so what else use do I get out of it), and when that fills up, I bring it inside and put it in this giant rocketship coin bank I got from work. This thing will hold around $250 of randomly mixed loose coins. That's a good chunk to throw in the bank at any point, and also enough to fall back on in case of emergency. So save your change; even if it is just pennies.

One last tip: Save your soda cans. When I lived with my parents, my Dad and I were Coke fiends. We'd gather the cans in trash bags and keep them in the garage. Then we'd fill up an entire carload and take them to a place that recycles and buys them. That was gas money for a month at least.

Yeah, none of this sounds like much, but when you're on a low budget to start with, every bit counts.
