To run around msconfig, it's a requisite that you have a basic understanding of what each program is. How do you do this? Same way I learned. Poking and proding, trial and error.

The farthest right tab has programs that launch on system boot. These do not show up in the startup folder. Look at the location. Does that look like anything you've installed? If you have a virus scanner, you'll see it. If you have a firewall, you'll see it. If there's anything that strikes you as something you've never installed, unclick it, and it will not boot on startup.

Sometimes there's just programs we like that we don't want booting on startup. Fine. But if there is something malicious, like GATOR, GOTO the location given and simply delete the folder. I don't trust windows add/remove program, as not everything is registered there.

I won't even get into touching the registry.
