...The Phaaaaaantom of the Opera is there inside my mind...

Question Posted Monday November 21 2005, 9:52 pm

You answered a Q of mine a little earlier about the Phantom of the Opera and I have one more question.

I've heard a mixture of opinions on my singing a song from the Phantom. Some agreed with you, that it was demanding, and others said that if I can sing high than it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Purely out of curiosity, what is it about the Phantom that is so demanding? Are there any special techniques that you have to learn before singing it or something? I mean, my choir has done some pretty hard stuff, including a number from Madame Butterfly. And I have a pretty mature voice and I can sing pretty high comfortably if I'm warmed up enough. Is the Phantom harder than Madame Butterfly?

Also, could you suggest some more solos? Because Because I'm not really much of an alto, so Chicago wouldn't do (I mean, it would work if I tried really hard, but it wouldn't show the good side of my voice. I'm really bad at singing in a chest voice), and everybody does "On My Own" and "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Mis. Besides, isn't Les Mis. more for ensemble work?

Thanks a lot.

If you can sing up there comfortably without (and this is the clincher) your voice sounding strained more power to you. The demanding things about this song are first the breath control needed (lots of held on notes and while the phrases are fairly short you need lots of power and support in them to make a rich enough sound) and of course the top notes required. If you can deal with both of those then you may be ok. What i meant about being 13 is basically that it's unusual to have a rich, mature enough voice for the song. Although it's sung by a pretty innocent woman, it still can't sound too much like a very young girl.

Les mis does have some great ensemble work (one more day etc etc) but there are solos not involving any chorus also.

More solos:
Tonight- West Side Story (would suit your voice and age goes down well in auditions)
If I were a Bell (upbeat number) or "I've never been in love before"(more lovey)- Guys and Dolls
Evermore Without You(a guy's song but you could sing it the octave up if u have a high voice)- Woman In White (not many people will do that one)
Too Much In Love To Care (if you could rope a guy friend into filling in the man's part. Worhth doing if you're looking for something no-one else will do)- Sunset Boulevard
Too Much For One Heart/ The Movie In My Mind- Miss Saigon (not hugely high though)

Hope You get the part you want!
