Correction
Just a bit of info. It costs about 600,000 to keep a person in prison for life. It costs about 8 million to put someone to death.
The reason is court costs. Death row inmates go through appeals systems, and after a number of appeals, years (as much as 10-15) of trials, time already spent in prison, and exhaustive investigations, it costs FAR more to put someone to death.
