This is a rather controversial and debatable question, but I suppose you were asking for opinions so here's mine: I think that modesty is in the eye of the beholder for the most part, but there are certain commonly accepted ideals. Modesty is really, not flaunting oneself, and remaining humble to a politically accepted degree while in public be it in appearence, personality, or behavior.

mod·es·ty n.
The state or quality of being modest.
Reserve or propriety in speech, dress, or behavior.
Lack of pretentiousness; simplicity.

(Having or showing a moderate estimation of one's own talents, abilities, and value.
Having or proceeding from a disinclination to call attention to oneself; retiring or diffident. See Synonyms at shy1.
Observing conventional proprieties in speech, behavior, or dress.
Free from showiness or ostentation; unpretentious. See Synonyms at plain.
Moderate or limited in size, quantity, or range; not extreme: a modest price; a newspaper with a modest circulation.) (above are quotes from dictionary.com)

Modesty, in most cases, is the lack off being show-offy or wearing revealing clothing.

Perfection is the virtue of modesty. Modesty is believe you are nobody, and nobody is perfect, so you are perfect. ;)

OK, seriously though, modesty is a major aspect in every persons life. It will make you want to do better in everything you do, instead of being overly proud of somethnig you did. It will make you stop thinking about the A you got in LA and make you want to get it in SS as well.
It also works well with friendship. Most friends don't like people who constantly talk about how awesome they are, unless those friends are like that.
Modesty is a trait that a few have. And those who do have more friends and happiness than those who don't. That's why those with ego usually are also depressed.
