Alright, noticed you didn't exactly get a lot of help there. Gifs wreck images if you don't use a good program (such as Jasc software or Photoshop). If you're saving in paint I find PNG format leaves the image in perfect quality and is relatively small. In PSP (Jasc) for example, after you save your image in gif format, it's automatically smaller while not distorting color. For paint try to keep the color range smaller, and the image size smaller as well. You might consider resizing the image. If you don't want to buy/trail these programs, I suggest you use an image cruncher (such as spinwave). So here's my overview of a few file types:
-Gif (paint=bad, jasc=good)
-JPG/JPEG (bad & viscous looking)
-PNG (big file but perfect quality)
-Bmp (perfect quality, HUGE file size)
Hope that helps contact me if you have any questions!

You have to make the picture smaller or lower the quality.
