Believe it or not, I am not in the getting out of gym class phase, and my mom is not making me run track. I am actually not trying to get out of anything. I am trying to be able to do more than I was before.
I have 2 reasons for why I want to tear my ACL. My first reason is to solve the knee problems I already have. These are stuff like tendinitis and bursitis. My parents at first did not believe that anything was wrong when I first complained about the pain associated with it, and did not allow me to see a doctor until 2 months after it happened. An MRI revealed Tendinitis a Bursitis, and suggested a few sissions of physical therapy. Well, they held off for 4 months due to my heavy schedule, and thought everything was perfect until the day I told them so. Throughout SEVENTEEN sessions of physical therapy, and little improvement, they thought I was cured. They brought me to the doctor, who said that I was fine, even though I still had pain, and was still unable to straighten my knee.
Well, as a result, I have been in a sort of constant pain ever since. They are unnegotiable in taking me to another doctor (The first was obviously inept), and believe that nothing was wrong in the first place. So, the only way to get the treatment I actually need is to do something drastic, that is noticable. ACL is easiest to rupture, so I chose to work on that.
My second reason is Marching Band. I do not want to get out of it, I want to get more involved in it. I want to be drum major. However, our band is notorious for picking people who are physically unable to march and making them drum major. Heck, that's happened with 6 of our last 7 drum majors. Some of them are the worst leaders ever, yet they change and become the leader they want to be.
It's not getting out of things. I love gym. Favorite class of the day. But I just see these to be more important...
Thanks for the response! What I can tell you is that when your parents see you put your own money up, that may do the trick.
Parents can at times be all too willing to take someone else's word over yours.
Find another doctor, pay for it yourself.
Present the results, see what happens.
The ACL business can literally ruin the rest of your standing life.
The drum major business is well and good. If you really want to learn something about leadership... Have you considered ROTC?
The thing to consider here is that the drum major position is a slim chance.
The injury you are talking about has a 100% chance of making your life less than it could be.
ACL is subject to constant danger of a repeat.
One day you are walking down the stairs and when you put your weight on that leg, ZAP! ...you go down the stairs.
The odds of falling down stairs without getting hurt are proportional to the angle of the next landing and the number of steps between you and that landing. You fall down a single story while not prepared (stunt man kinda training) you are going to get hurt in ways you really don't want.
Ride a bike? Hop up on a pedal to get up a hill, and WHAMMO! ... no more knee.
Like to jog? Too risky for an ACL patient.
Once you get a serious injury like that, your parents may opt you out of all sports. Drum major could be out.
Picture this: The doctor says "Well now, he shouldn't spend any time on his knee that he doesn't have to."
No MATTER WHAT you tell your parents, they aren't going to let you march. NOTHING you say will outweigh what the doctor tells them.
You already know that is a 100% fact.
Your chances are so much better finding a different doctor.
Go to a rehab center and ask if they can suggest a good one.
Your options are many and varied, don't limit them.
