first of all, be as kind and affectionate as possible. honestly say- i don't think this is working out. let him know the qualities of your relationship, and tell him your reasons that you don't wanna be together anymore. try to make him think about the bright side of things, and, if you two can still be friends, be sure to tell him that. like i said, don't act rude; no matter how much you really don't wanna be with him anymore, keep things positive.
