well i sing in my choir and i was wondering if anyone else was an alto or second soprano. i recently moved up to a higher choral group and was put in alto and i cant get used to it and i feel like less of a singer because im singing harmony instead of the melody. anyone have any experience? <3
Getting the melody out of your head? Difficult, especially when you're used to being a soprano. But not impossible. First of all, pay attention to reading the music- not just singing by ear. Take your music home and play your line on the piano, if you can. (If you can't play piano, ask a friend to help). Focus on tuning out the sopranos (this is key).
As long as you don't feel the music is too low for your voice, you should be able to get used to being an alto in time. If it's really not working, talk to your choir teacher. Tell her your concerns (but don't whine!) and ask if there's any possibility you could be moved back to soprano.
