The one thing you must understand, as obvious as it clearly is so (thus overseen), everyone is different and have different tastes.
Some guys, actually most guys go only by the appearance of girls. They don't realize that *dating* is actually what people originally do in preperation for marraige (seeing if this person is the one you are to give your life to). They don't care about you, just the image they see from a distance. If you are rather pathetic and have the looks, I'd say this is the easy road to a guy.
For other guys, ones who care only for characteristics and personality, they will most likely go for the innocents. One who is kind, trustworthy, tolerant, and hasn't been around the block as often. They want to know this girl hasn't been dumped a lot so that they know this girl probably has fewer problems to worry about. If you have been around the block but are still innocent or have changed your "ways", it'd probably be best if you make this stand out. Don't dress like a skank, for one thing.
And the rest either will take any girl or want both character and looks in a girl.
I prefer to say that characteristics count, looks are nice.
