Came to ask question and got sidetracked reading the Porsche question. I have a 69 camaro...I like the old muscle cars.
Then I checked out your website.I think it will be great!
OK now the question. I live in a very small town. Isp's are not plentiful at all here. Myvine is the one I have. My problem is that they boot me offline every 30 minutes. I do have 2 days a week (usually Mon.& Tues.) where it will allow 2 hours. If I want to go to advicenators chat it is a problem (can't come back on with same name). If I want to download anything it can be a problem. Not to mention it is just plain annoying! They have a agere systems pci soft modem and are Microsoft H.323 telephony service provider if that info is useful to you.
I contacted myvine about the problem. They said it appeared to be my local server...duh. Tech support gave me a code to try under modem info, advanced extra settings s10=250 This did nothing. My brother told me to put 3 commas after my dial up number...this did nothing.
I will get knocked off even if I am in the middle of doing something online so I don't think a connection keeper type download would help...do you? If so I am willing to try it. If you think it is worth a try a reputable program suggestion would be appreciated.
Anything I can do or am I just stuck with this? The 2 hrs. I can live with but, 30 minutes is aggravating to say the least.
I do have direct TV and we are planning to possibly go with their broadband service one day. We plan on moving soon though and will wait until then to switch because of the initial cost of an extra dish and all that. In the mean time though do you have any brilliant advice?
Thank you for the compliment on the website. If I ever get time to work on it, it should be really something.
As for your modem issues... Many ISPs buy too few lines for the number of customers they currently have. As such, they "accidentally" bump everyone off on a regular schedule.
To find out if this is the case, see if you can get in touch with another user of your ISP. If they have the same problem, then there you go.
When you say: "...They have a agere systems pci soft modem and are Microsoft H.323 telephony service provider..." where are you getting that info? If that is off the dial-up networ settings on your machine, then it is YOU who have the Agere systems softmodem.
It is highly unlikely that any ISP would be able to run win modems.
What is a winmodem? A "soft"modem or "win"modem is a single chip modem which uses your computers CPU to do most all of the work that the modem should be doing. You could accurately say that it is emulating a "real" modem in software.
This is bad. Why? Because your computer has enough to do all ready. The result of a winmodem is usually (in my experience) slow and buggy connections.
What do you do to fix it?
Replace the modem with a "real" modem.
Unfortunately they are getting harder to find as modems go the way of the Modemasaurus.
If you go browsing eBay or something, remember to look for modems the plainly state:
"Hardware Modem"
"on board DSP chip" (Digital Signal Processing)
"NOT a winmodem"
...or the like.
If you can manage an external modem, you have a good chance of finding a hardware modem.
USB external modems CAN BE winmodems. It could go either way. You also have the USB overhead (minimal, unless your system is really slow) to worry about.
Serial connected external modems ARE SAFE. The serial link is not suitable for the amount of data interchange that a soft modem requires, therefore if you find an external v.92 (or v.90) 56K modem, you will be safe. You also get the pretty blinky connection lights to look at this way. ;-)
Here's an inexpensive, well reviewed modem in the external variety:
... I'll tell you right now you won't beat that price.
Here is an internal hardware modem on the cheap. This is a decent modem. Worth the price and then some... Just PAY ATTENTION to the comments. Use the drivers on the CD, or download the new ones from intel, but do NOT let it install what windows thinks is correct.
All this having been said... I like external modems. I always have. Takes a small power burden off your computer's power supply and puts more safety measures inbetwixt your computer and the phone lines
Did I mention you get connection, diagnostic and status information indicators? Or: cool blinkies? :-)
