I have been a proud owner of a Dell Pocket DJ for just about four months now. So to answer your question, no, you can't change the battery yourself. Once the battery runs out (which they guarantee for... a year I think it is, but don't hold me to that)you will have to send your Pocket DJ back to Dell, and pay to get a new battery. So yeah they basically own you for life. It's a lithium battery, so as you already know, you can charge it. It can go without charging for about four and a half hours. (They say ten hours, but trust me, it doesn't happen.)
If you do order one, I recommend to get a Jam Jacket (teehee)for your Pocket DJ, it really does help to protect from scratches. Mine glows in the dark. :-) Go here for more information: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)

Okay, if the batteries are gold that means they're rechargeable, so if they are..then you can charge them. If they're just regular batteries, like Duracell or something..then do nott charge them, it won't work. They should be chargable though.♥
