Lemon juice for a sore throat?!?

Question Posted Sunday January 30 2005, 10:29 pm

After many years of research and singing, I found that lemon juice does NOT help a sore throat. Rather, it increases the phlegm and acid in your throat, which makes it worse, not better. There are many schools of thought here, but I prefer to go with the tea with honey/sugar plus licorice and NOT the lemon in water or hot water. Believe me, my ex-husband and I still sing regularly, both operatically and musical theatrically, and we both have voices that are solid, strong and pliable with no wobble or dryness at all. This is because we never use lemon juice or Halls cough drops to take care of a sore throat.
As I said, everyone has their own preferences. I just thought I'd present mine to you because I'd hate to think that someone is spreading lemon juice as the be-all/cure-all for a sore throat -- It Really Isn't. shelbyjune.

Does it really? I never actually tried it because I hate lemon unless it's on salad or in very very sweet lemonade. I don't use Halls as a cure. I just use them to ease the soreness, and ricolas to keep my throat clear before an audition.
However, as you said yourself, everyone's voice is different and responds to different stuff. I just listed what my voice responds well to. I sing opera as well - not professionally yet, but that's my plan. As for sore throats...I very rarely get sore throats. I just get viruses that hit my nose and move directly to my voice...I had something this past summer that caused me to lose my voice completely, and it healed only when I lost it again, then regained it in the fall. Scared me, as I'm sure you can imagine, being a singer yourself!
That's really interesting about the lemon juice, though, I'll mention that to my voice teacher.
Thank you for the information, though I never did say lemon juice was a "be-all/cure-all" for a sore throat. I certainly don't think so, and my voice teacher just mentioned it a couple of times. There is no be-all/cure-all for a sore throat except sleep, water, and time. I think you may have misinterpreted my response to that question as stressing lemon juice, and it may have come off that way, but I didn't mean for that to be the stress. Thanks for telling me though, really. I appreciate it!
