Question Posted Sunday January 30 2005, 12:06 am

I'm almost 13and I'm a girl. I like this guy at school and he sends all of these signs to me! All of my friends can see them too, so it's not just me dreaming. But I recently found out that he likes this other chick. This is actually first love and I mean LOVE!!!! In the past, every guy that I like is friends then I tell him then they hate me. Should I risk a friendship and tell him that I like him?

Well, before you go jumping in, and telling this guy how you feel, there are a few steps you can go through to see how he feels. Here they are:

1. There is nothing strange about you- this is a highly common problem - tons of relationships start off as friendships.
2. You need to "play your hand" cautiously- and even then there are no guarantees. If you don't want to ask this guy out straightforwardly about his feelings toward you, then maybe you should try a few pseudodates - you know, long drives together, walks at the beach, some carefully chosen flicks. Keep the conversation light and unthreatening. And whatever you do - don't stalk him at school!
3. If you feel like taking a bigger risk, get a friend of yours to tell a bud of his about your feelings and see what comes back to you. If your guy doesn't seem interested - slack off, and the damage to your friendship should be minimal.
4. Remember, if you want a pretty quick answer, body language sometimes speaks volumes. The next time you're deep in conversation with your crush, touch him on the arm, the shoulder, or if you're feeling brave - the face. If he flinches and draws back, the feeling is almost definitely not mutual, but if he smiles at you- or better yet, reciprocates - you've got him!
