I'm always craving junk food. When it comes to self-control, I have none in the food category. If I have a bag of chips, I could probably eat the whole bag if nobody was there to stop me. I just get caught up in something else and eat continuously and I don't like when I do it. I need some ideas for (easy) snacks to make right at home (besides like fruits/vegetables). I don't want something that will take forever to make either. I will appreciate any good ideas!
Additional info, added Saturday January 8 2005, 12:15 pm: Oh, and I'm like *ALWAYS* hungry..even if I eat a full meal I'm still hungry like 15 minutes later. Any extra help??. 1) Don't eat chips or anything straight out of the bag. Put them in a SMALL dish and eat them SLOWLY. After a time (a matter of days) you won't even finish them.
2) Don't eat in front of the TV or computer. You don't pay attention to what you're doing and suddenly it's gone.
3) It takes at least 20 minutes for your food to take effect in your stomach. So if you feel hungry after 15 minutes, drink a glass of ICE water and wait another 15 or more minutes.
4) Get rid of chips and anything fattening. Replace your snacks with fruits and raw vegetables (I'll bet your really tired of hearing that, aren't you?) But there's nothing wrong with adding a little to it. Reduced Fat Peanut Butter (I prefer Jif because it's only 60% peanuts) on apples or celery is excellent and it really curbs the "wanna" appetite.
5) Salads? Make them ahead of time, put them in one-serving, air-tight containers (lettuce will get brown really fast if you don't). Another hint. Put dressing on the side and dip your forkful into it before putting it into your mouth. That way you get the flavor of it without all that fat and drenching.
6) Drink 6-8 glasses of ICE water a day. Notice ICE. It revs up your metabolism. If you have trouble with that, start with Crystal Light with 4 glasses/4 glasses water, then cut back to 3 glasses CL, 3-5 glass water, etc.
7) Exercise. The easiest? Walk! Start with 1/2 mile and work up. 20 minutes per mile is a good pace to aim for. And it cuts your desire for junk food (don't ask me how, it just does).
8) Don't deny yourself a candy bar or a SMALL bag of chips ONCE a week, but ONLY ONCE a week, as a reward if you stick to not having any the rest of the week.

There aren't a lot of options other than fruits and veggies to take care of this problem other than health food snacks that are low in fat and calories but still taste good. Try to look for those in the grocery store they have tons! Also Rachael Ray has a great cookbook with fast snack ideas that kids at age 8 can make! So they don't take a long time. Maybe you could premake some on the weekend and refrigerate them and during the week you can take them out and eat them! ♥ [ angel411's advice column | Ask angel411 A Question ]

Mandee answered Saturday January 8 2005, 1:14 pm: Hey! Lots of people know where you're coming from. We all have our cravings, and it can be difficult to stop them when you're so used to it.
If youlike sugar, instead of reaching for cookies or cupcakes make a smoothie! Here's some of my favorites...
Mango Smoothie
1cup pineapple juice
1cup orange juice
1/2 frozen banana
1cup pineapple sherbet
1 1/2 cups frozen mango slices
Put in blender...blend! lol
Lemon/Pineapple Smoothie
2cups lemonade
1cup lemon yogurt (low fat..if you want)
1 1/2 cups frozen pineapple (cut up)
1 cup pineapple sherbet
Same then..just blend.
Add sugar if you want, there's something called Splenda- taste just like sugar but it isn't and it doesn't have calories and such.
It's okay to eat chips. But you need to watch and cut down on portions. Because if you don't your eatting habits will never change. They do have low fat chips..carb free and what not. But I don't know how those work, they might not taste as good. If you ever have a craving that you can not control, go eat chips...but not a lot. Maybe you aren't as hungry as you think you are. Most people eat because they are bored or they eat to make themselves happy.
You can try crackers as a subsitute for chips or even pretzels.
You can also make a parfait. Which is basically frozen yogurt with fruit such as berries or whatever you'd like.
Cindy answered Saturday January 8 2005, 1:14 pm: I have that same problem, but it's cool, easy ways to solve it- when you want chips, eat them, but instead of eating right out of the bag, put about a handful in a bowl and eat that. Then if you're hungry again, you get a cvhance to think about it, if what you really want it an extra bowl of chips, then have more. It's kinda like a wake up session in the middle of the food. And an easy food, grape with sugar on them. It's still a fruit but it's really sweet, and really yummy. Hope I helped! [ Cindy's advice column | Ask Cindy A Question ]
Karen answered Saturday January 8 2005, 12:13 pm: To help stop the cravings, put an elastic on your wrist and snap it when ever you get a craving for something. Try to tell your parents not to buy any chips and other junk foods. You can make crackers made into sandwiches (crackers with cut up deli: cheese, ham, etc.), a sandwich that you like, you can have celery or apples with peanut butter, you can make a grilled chicken salad (that might take a while to make but it's really good), and so many other foods! Hope I helped :)
