Well your lucky he is shy because i bet it will be easier when im goin to advise you just walk up to him and start talking. Together, you two will eventually loosen up. Ask him if he could help you on your homework, tell him you like his shirt, or just say hi, how you doin. Either way you start the convo. i bet he would be happy you did.
