Guitar I guess it was a stroke of luck that I found your advice page. This is jokerzgrl (Victoria) and I have come to ask you some questions about the instrument we know as the guitar. Someone was supposed to teach me how to play, but they said that about three months ago, so now, I'm going to teach myself, If I get good enough at the guitar, I'll try my hand at the drums. But do you have any pointers for a novice guitar player? Any books, websites, do's and don'ts, the usual?

Hrmm, well that depends on what you want to learn. Do you wish to learn rhythm guitar, or lead? Or both?
First off, I would suggest getting a good chord/scale book (there are a bunch floating around, pick one that has both chords and scales). This will help with both rhythm and lead. Also, it helps if the book has a CD with "jam tracks." These will help you learn strumming patterns and timing for soloing.
The best thing I can say is to go to a bookstore and look for a book teaching how to play guitar. Flip through a few pages, and see which one you're most comfortable reading.
Also, learning other songs helps you learn how to play. Places like www.mxtabs.net and www.ultimate-guitar.com have a wide selection of tabs and a few articles on how to play and techniques.
Finally, I would warn that it will take a while to learn songs that you really want to learn, and that you should start with simple songs with easy solos and easy chords. I would suggest Bob Dylan, because he uses about three of four chords per song. Any folk songs would work as well.
I hope this helps, and good luck with your guitar playing!
