money refunds from card transactions

I recently purchased a battery
from motoworld on fitting the battery i found it to be faulty i returned the battery and i was told that i could not have a refund but they would give me goods of the same value,
I would like to know If I csan claim a refund because I was forced to buy a new battery from another store.

If it dosen't work you are entitled to a refund. It's as simple as that.

Well, did it say anything in the store or on da reciept about no refunds? If not then you have all rights to claim a receipt. I'm not sure tho.
