Firstly, don't be depressed. If this guy is so blind not to see what a catch you are, than he doesn't deserve you! Just remember that. So really, there isn't anything to be depressed about.
I know you might be pretty bummed IF he refuses, but you must remember, that there are other guys that are HOTTER, SEXIER and so much CUTER than him.
I think you really just have to pluck up your courage and leave your insecurities behind. Just brace yourself and ask him. Just do it. I know you might be REALLY nervous, but get it over and done with. For all you know, he might like you too, but may be too shy to ask.
just imagine if you two really liked each other and didn't go out coz both were too scared to ask. what a missed oportunity!!
So take my advice, trust that you are the best and go all out to ask him. Just remember, don't get your hopes up too high. You'll be fine. I trust that you are brave enough to do this.
