If you two truly have a strong friendship, and he doesn't feel the same way as you do when you ask him out, things may be awkward for a while, but you two should eventually be able to work things out and continue as usual.
If you don't think you can continue with the friendship if he "rejects" you, or if telling him how you feel would truly cause him to back out of the friendship (in which case, he's a coward), you might seriously want to reconsider all of your feelings for him, friendly and otherwise.

You ask him if he "might like to go somewhere just the two of you, like a movie or something"... and is he says no then say "ok" all perky like you didn't just get turned down then continue on with the conversation like nothing ever happened...
