Where to go to get my book published?

Question Posted Saturday April 11 2015, 8:00 pm

13/f <-- probably doesn't matter.

Hi, I've written a book recently which I am really proud of. It's kind of a romance/action book if that helps. I want to get it published but I don't know where to start. I've checked the internet but I don't know who to trust. Any ideas?

I really want it to be sucessful too. Honestly, I wouldn't mind too much if it wasn't worldwide sucessful but good enough to help give my parents a bit of extra money or treat them. Wouldn't mind getting me a new laptop either but you don't care about that.

So, any tips on:
- Maybe getting an editor to make it better before publishing
- Places to get it published
- How to make it more sucessful

Thanks in advance :)

As a published author myself, I think I might be able to help you out here.

First, you should know that there are basically three types of publishing options. One are traditional publishers like say Penguin, Doubleday or HaperCollins for example. A second is self-publishing. Last but not least, you can use a print on demand publisher.

Chances are, unless you are famous or have been previously published, traditional publishers are out. You can't even get a manuscript seen by them unless you hire and go through a literary agent.

So, of the two options remaining, I went with the on demand publisher because they seem to have more pull in bookstores and retail outlets. They also have options to help market and promote your books as well.

If you choose to go he self-publishing route, one of the better options in Lulu.com. As far as printing on demand goes, I went through iUniverse.com.

When it comes to editing, on demand publishers will often have packages that allow for an editorial review to help enhance your book. You may also want to seek out editors through services like Fiverr.com or find a literature student at your local university.

Nobody can guarantee your book will be a success but the best ways to try to do so are to get as much publicity as you can. Set up book signings with local books stores, interviews with radio or television stations, be active with dedicated social media accounts and create a website. Try to get people to write and post reviews for you as well, they go a long way.

Good luck.

The best website I know of is:

I started writing too seriously for onceat grandma age tho I wrote short stories more for fun at your age. I have 2 completed books and its hard to find yourself a book agent. An editor is also important, and then finding a publisher but if you find an agent willing to promote your book to publishing houses they get a cut of the money made off it and shouldn't ask for money up front. those who do are usually disreputable companies.

Very important to making a good impression is the first thing anyone sees, your query letter as it's called. You can find instructional books on how to get published at your local bookstore. It should have instructions on everything, how to determine what the genre of your book is, how long a particular genre novel generally runs (how many words.) If your story comes no where near, it may fit the catacory of a short story. theres a lot to learn and I'm still learning.

I did hear when my kids were in Middle school or maybe it was grade school of an opportunity for kids who wrote to get their story published because a publisher or agent was going to be visiting the school to search for the next young person to help along in the writing and publishing world. So it may be a good idea to just approach your Language Arts teacher and let him/her know you are serious and ask whether they know of any special opportunitys coming up for young writers. You might even ask for their opinion of your work, to read and point out the usual editing stuff if they have time, since they teach grammar, they can help do the first polish, thats if they have the time. good luck!
