Then they can only work a certain number of hours a day, between the time school ends for the day and (generally) between 10pm and midnight. This depends on the day of the week and the type of job. You are also limited in the number of hours a week you can work while school is open.
This is all done to make sure you stay in school and a employer does not take advantage of you. The law also restricts the type of work you can do. In general you are restricted to service type jobs such as fast food restaurants and such.
Congress is revisiting this law at this time to tighten the restrictions to ensure that people your age and the 16 year old remain in school and concentrate on school work and not be out working to support themselves or their families.
If Congress does change the law they will do so not to be mean but to ensure you and others like you get every opportunity to get the education you need to make a place for yourself in this world as an adult.
IF you and your family need financial help there may be programs available to you and them. Write us back and tell us what you know of the family's financial problems and hopefully one of us will be able to give you suggestions as to what agency can help you. Include the state you live in as this would be helpful as well. [ adviceman49's advice column | Ask adviceman49 A Question ]

Just try googling where you can work at 14, or go into stores and ask! I don't think you are going to be able to make enough to support your family, but you can get a little extra cash at least.
