I've been playing piano for 6 or 7 years and I found out how to write a song by lots of trial and error. You really get better with each song.
I would write the lyrics first. You can then get the feel of a mood or a particular sound you want your song to sound like. Then, for piano, I start with writing plain chords to match the accents on the melody of my song. Then I add in the notes in the middle of the song...
then viola.
Its a little more complicated than that, and you may find a different way of doing it.
Just don't give up and don't force it out of yourself!

personally, the way i would go about it is try and find your favourite key...get your chord progressions going...and also begin with one line that you really like, it could be a saying or something. then get a tune going to that line, fit it in with your chord progressions and then you can usually easily go from there...that's what me and a friend did once, that was good fun! good luck with how ever u decide to do it! xox.

Well, to start off with theres plenty of great songs out there. Use those as examples. Listen to the beat and the mood of like your favorite love song. When I write songs I just write poems and try to fix the rythym of it later. Just remember, poems don't have to rhyme. It just takes practice. And since your 13, you have your whole life to write great songs. A lot of people have trouble doing this kind of thing. Me too. Unless your like Bob Dylan or Greg Allman. THe songs that you have probaly tried to write are probaly pretty good. Don't throw those out. Most of the greatest song writers ever, there lyrics started out as poetry. Like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. Believe me, I know exactly what your talking about. It's very frustrating. I've played guitar for 2 yrs now.

I've never wrote a song or anything, but think of something that really upset your or a person that makes you feel good. Just write about what you feel. Make your songs kind of a journal for yourself. Sorry that's all I can think of!
