Question Posted Sunday May 23 2004, 7:50 pm

I've been trying to convince my parents to get me a cell phone forever. I've tried the "everybody has one" method and the "reasons I need one" method but they wont crack. How do I convince them to let me get one? I have my reasons(good ones too) for needing one.

Thanks 4 the help

I've offered to pay for it myself because I have a summer job that can pay for it..

hey! hun i had the same problem for soooo long!! then finally xmas came around!! haha. i told my mom that i thought i was mature and responsible enough for one, but you need to do more than show your parents, you need to prove to them that you'll be responsible with it! start tokeep your room clean, do all your homeowrk, get good grades, pick up around the house1 that sort of stuff! (if you dont already!) then when you think you have proved it pretty well, ask them nicely and remind them of how good you've been! also maybe you could research phones on the internet and find a cheap family plan! it worked for me! good luck!!

Have they offered reasons as to why they won't allow you a mobile/cell phone? Phones are cheap nowadays and a worthwhile investment.

It could be they're afraid that the phone bills could run far too high, even with a job; where I live, there are always these horror stories of teenagers in debt because of thousand-dollar phone bills. :) A lot of parents have that worry, so to counteract that, get a prepaid phone (where you buy credit _when_ you need it, instead of being on a plan), or get a plan which allows a spending limit to be set. Certain plans also allow you to talk to another person on the same plan for free at a certain time, so mobile phones can actually be pretty cheap. Just do a lot of investigating and plan it all out...

Good luck.

Okay, you're going to need to do some serious convincing. Does your computer have PowerPoint? If yes, make a slide show. Heres an example of order of slides:
- Title
- Background information and stats
- Pros
- Cons
- Cost total
- Information on the phone you want
- End

Explain that you would pay for the plan if they paid for the phone.
Use ClipArt and animation effects to make your slide show look nice. Present it at a time when your parents aren't busy. On the end page it's a good idea to put something like "please consider" then ask them about a week later.

I have used this for getting instant messaging, aol teen controls, a room redo for my birthday, and guitar lessons instead of piano. Good luck!

What are your reasons for NEEDING a cell phone? Anyways, do what I did, go away for a week (for some reason) and they'll give you a phone so they can call you 24/7.

Do you realise how expensive cell phones are. Even for a cheap plan it's $25 a month after fees and taxes. So your asking them to spend $300 or more a year so you can have a cell phone.

Do you really need one that bad? Are you willing to spend $300 for a phone? If so, you should consider paying for it yourself; or at least try and make a deal with your parents and see if you can both put money towards a phone.

If you want something in life you have to work for it.
