Is it safe to play the starbound game? They are still working on it, and that makes me nervous! Will it hurt my computer? It looks really fun, but I don't want to get in trouble. :( What would you do? (link)

Starbound is on Steam, currently for $14.99. I'm not sure what exactly your concerns are, but *I* am inclined to trust the content that I purchase from Steam:

I hope that helps.

Every time I click on something on my computer a thing pops up saying:"Please choose the program you want to open with this file". It has adobe reader, internet explorer, quicktime & itunes, when I click on any of them, something pops up saying "view your downloads" , we can't download anything. It says that the program I need to download might not be on the computer? I'm using windows xp. Evertime I clock on any program in my computer something pops up saying "choose what program you want to open this with." or I might not have the right program. I can't get on windows media player, control panel, adobe reader, etc. I can't download or anything. What is wrong? How can I fix this?
Please help me!!! I can't download anything on my computer and I don't know why. (link)

You can repair file associations one by one, or using a script but in a situation such as yours where things have gotten to the state you describe, I believe that doing that would be an inefficient bandaid. (You can Google something like "windows xp repair file associations" if you're interested.)
Something "larger" than a few simple forgotten file types is going on here, I think. I think, though, that you may be able to resolve this without too much trouble.
- Windows XP has a system restore feature, so you should have restore points available at a time when your computer was ok. Try the following:
Go to Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore and find and use a restore point when the computer was working as it should.
- I would wonder if the problem is specific to your user account, (profile.) If your computer has more than one user account setup, try logging into another account to see if the problem is specific to a certain profile.
If you do NOT have any other accounts configured, you might try creating one and using that to test. Again, you'd be doing this to see if the problem is related to a specific user profile.
- You might try some of the free online scanners to see if something along of the lines of a trojan or malware is the issue:

My computer is missing a lot of programs that we used to have. It won't download anything and I can't access any of the programs I have on my computer. Will it work if I wipe out my computer & re-install windows vista? (link)
|
That would be one approach, assuming that you have a restore disk or the Vista OS disk. It would almost certainly resolve the issues.
It should be considered a last-resort measure, unless you're comfortable with the entire process of a format and reinstallation, which must first include a thorough backup of your personal stuff.
NOTE that you would have to back up a number of things. All your user-created data, such as documents, email contacts, music, videos, etc., etc.
It's hard to be specific based on your limited description of the problem, but from what you've said, I'd would suggest that you visit a few of the online virus scanners and run them to see if you have something of a malware / trojan nature going on.
- Vista has a system restore feature available that may be able to restore your computer back to a time when it was working the way it should.
Click the Start button, and just enter in "restore" and choose System Restore. Work your way through the windows and be sure to choose a time when the computer was working as expected.
- If your computer has more than one user account setup, try logging into another account to see if the problem is specific to a certain profile.
If you do NOT have any other accounts configured, you might try creating one and using that to test. Again, you'd be doing this to see if the problem is related to a specific user profile.

I am a movie addict, I love watching DVD's. I just promised myself tonight that every Saturday night is going to be me time to sit down and watch a movie. It will be my little tradition. However, when doing that, I am limited to just the movies I own. So, does anybody know of any websites where I can legally download movies for free and keep them on my computer for future reference if I want to see it again? It would mean the world to me if someone could find what I am asking for and let alone, have it work.
Thanks for the answers! God bless (link)

I absolutely recommend NetFlix. They have a variety of plans, and they're all pretty cheap. For just about what you'd spend going out to a single movie, you can have a month's worth of all the movies that you want.
They have unlimited streaming only, unlimited streaming with one DVD or Blu-Ray as often as you can watch and return for another, etc. Check them out and see what you think.
I'm sure there are sites for free Indie type movies, and some of those are pretty good. To do this legally, though, you're going to have to spend a little money
The best way to watch streaming NetFlix is with a TV that supports the Netflix app, or with one of the Netflix enabled devices, like a Roku. All the information is on the Netflix site, or though Googling. You can also watch on a computer, but won't get the same quality video.

it operates on windows 7. I've tried going to control panel, and where it's supposed to say 'appearance and personalization' and instead it just says 'appearance' and there is no way to change it that way. I have also tried clicking on images and hitting 'set as background', it asks me if I'm sure, I confirm and it still doesn't happen. Neither does right clicking on my desktop, it offers me a number of options to personalize but none have to do with changing the background. any ideas? (link)
|
It somewhat makes a difference which version of Windows 7 came with your netbook. I suspect that it may be Basic, but...
Click the Windows Orb, (the artist formerly known as the Start button), and right there with the cursor flashing in the "Search Programs and Files" box, type in winver and hit Enter.
Please report back with what version you have. Should be right at the top of the informational window that pops up.

I am not very good with computers at all and I have been trying to figure out a way to get my contacts from one email account to another without having to write them all down. Is there a simpler way? (link)

You didn't mention if this was a matter of transferring contacts within hotmail accounts, or to-from a hotmail account...
It's generally about the same sort of process, but if you wanted to provide the specifics of what you want to do, it would help us to provide a more specific answer.
This page might give you the information that you need, though:

Well for some reason my iTunes is only playing certain songs. SInce limewire is no longer an option i have used this u-tube converter. it has worked great and all the songs play in my iTunes. But ever since lastnit my iTunes is only playing the songs that were done in limewire and are not playing the ones if used this utube converter site for. This has worked before for many months. so did i press a button on my laptop that for some reason enabled me to play the converted onesÉ My laptop is Vista if that helps. This is very fustrating because i dont know why all of a sudden they are not working and it is alot of songs. Please help if you have any idea why this is happening or if you have been in the same situation! thanks so much! (link)

Yup, this sure sounds like it would be frustrating!
I haven't run into a situation such as this, but have some general thoughts that may prove to be of value.
I prefer the free SharePod over iTunes, in fact, have two devices and don't even have iTunes installed. With that in mind, here is some stuff to think about:
- Assuming that you have monitoring enabled, you might try doing a restore point to a time before it broke. If it worked yesterday, restore to the day before yesterday, for example.
- I'm not sure how iTunes works, it may have built-in codecs handle playback. (It probably does.) Just in case, you might want to remove and install the most current version of whatever codec pack you use and see if that helps.)
- Are all the files of a standard format, MP3 for example? You might take a file or two that IS NOT playing and run it through dbPowerAmp or even Windows Media Player to be sure that they're in the standard and expected format. Try playing those files again and see if they work now or not.
- Can you play the problem files in another application such as Windows Media Player, Foobar or whatever you prefer? If they work in other software, then you're probably looking at a specific issue with iTunes, (which wouldn't be a huge surprise.)
- Try going into Control Panel, Add Remove Programs and see if there is an option to repair the installation. It would almost certainly be the "Change" button that you want, then work your way though what should be obvious choices.
- If that doesn't do the trick, you may want to remove and reinstall iTunes. Again, not being familiar with the software, a full removal and reinstall might require some-to-extensive rebuilding of your library, preferences, etc.
In a nutshell, if the music plays in other application but not iTunes, it's an iTunes issue.
If the music does NOT play in iTunes OR other apps either, then you're looking at a problem with the codecs installed on your system or with the files themselves. Re-encoding, testing having been done, will help verify this.
I hope this helps, good luck with it!
Happy New Year!

I have a hotmail account and i would like to know what it takes to find some one in Denmark that is on the help line that will help people and stop wasting our time. 3 months ago my hotmail went down, it took a month before it was working again and nearly cost me 400 kr in telephone calls, i also felt that’s some of the staff thought it was all a big joke. Now my hotmail went down again last Friday 24.12.2010 its now 31.12.2010. I have spoken to 4 people, they have all told me something different, and im no wiser, each phone call has been around 2o minutes to half a hour. Is there anyone one can contact for some positive help. (link)

I'm not sure that this is as direct a response to your question as you might have expected, but unless I'm missing something, this is the general situation.
(It should be noted that I'm not at all familiar with how Internet Service is provided in other countries, but would assume that it would follow the general practices and processes.)
When you find that you can't get your email through Hotmail, try this troubleshooting:
: Hotmail is web-based. I wouldn't expect an individual account to go down and server failures aren't particularly likely with a large provider such as this. There would be fall-back servers, etc.
I think that you should look at the client aspect of the problem, meaning the setup on YOUR side.
: Are you going to the Hotmail site and logging in there to read and send email?
If so, how are things in general? Were you able to navigate to and through the site in a reasonable amount of time? Is it possible that you have a spyware / virus problem that is causing trouble that is most evidenced in your attempts to use Hotmail?
Again, I don't know what's available to you in Denmark, or if the online scanners work, etc. Assuming that they do, try Googling 'Eset Online Scan' and give that a go. (Unless you have their NOD32 client installed, then it wouldn't be necessary.)
Do a general tuneup of your computer. Clear temp and browser cache files, right click on your NIC and choose Repair, which will flush the DNS resolver cache, ARP table and other useful stuff.
Try a different browser. If you're using Internet Explorer, try Firefox. If you're using Firfox, try Internet Explorer, at least for testing.
You'd be surprised at how much the simple things can help....
If you leave your computer running all the time, do a nightly RESTART, which will still leave it up and running when you want to use it, but will help free the memory from the days's use, clear temp files, etc.
Depending on how you connect and what you equipment you have:
- power down the modem / cable modem / dsl modem
- power down the router
- power down the computer
- Wait at least 5 minutes
- power ON the router, then modem and wait until it's all up and fully initialized
- power on the computer
: If you are using an email client to retrieve your email, (Thunderbird, Outlook-Outlook Express, etc.), try going directly to the Hotmail website and checking to see if you can get your email there.
If you CAN send & receive, you should look at reconfiguring your email client. You might Google for information on how it should be set up, or check the Hotmail site itself for this information.
-------------
I don't have a good feeling about this being especially helpful, but might be and is honestly all that I can think of to assist you.
Web-based stuff like this is just not usually a problem.
BEST OF LUCK! I know that this kind of thing is frustrating, so I hope this helps to get it sorted out.

I work in desktop support for a major insurance company and can tell you that we have both laptop and desktop HP computers for our people.
We have minimal hardware failures, and those have been with laptops that were dropped or left in the cold car overnight, brought in and started up without allowing warm up time.
No computer is going to like circumstances such as that, so based on my experience with HP, I would say they'd probably be your best bet.
(I've also built a number of computers with Asus motherboards that are still going strong, but don't have any experience with their computers.)
I'm not sure what you're looking to do with the laptop, but the business models are inclined to be a bit more "rugged" with the expectation of them being used in travel and such.
On the flip side of this coin, however, the business models may not have 'home' options such as built-in webcams and that type of thing. You'd really have to do a comparison of their models to see what works for you.
Best of luck in your search!

Note: Not interested in any other or better capture card at the moment.
Anyways, which one should I get? Is the difference in video quality great or just almost the same? What's the difference between them? Are they both good for capturing gaming footage or is one better than the other?

This really isn't an answer to your specific question, but I'd feel bad to not at least mention it so that you know what you might be getting into.
I'd like to suggest that you visit websites that have product reviews; newegg.com and amazon.com are some of MY favorites, but I'm sure there are other good ones as well. This will help give you a better idea of the situation.
I recommend this because I've had experience with USB-based recorders / capture devices and the results were not great.
I don't mean to be a wet blanket, but you should know that all the processing with USB devices such as these is going to be done by your computer, It will have to be a "beefy" machine to handle this workload AND keep the game playable.
I hope that whatever you end up with does the trick for you. In the old-school Quake 2 days I was in clan and we recorded games from the video output directly to a VCR. (Yeah, you know, with VHS tape. (Grinning))
Best of luck with it!

Alright im about to start my own computer business and i need a contract that explains everything i do not want to miss anything well its going to be a computer repair business and do not want to be screwed if i have legal issues so can someone help me it would be greatly appreciated (link)

I work in Desktop Support for a major insurance company, and do some work on the side. I haven't gone with an 'official' agreement, but have considered it...
Google "computer repair agreement" and you'll get quite a few relevant hits. Just check to see what others are using and copy & paste to suit your own needs.
You may also try Best Buy, Staples or wherever else. Tell them that you're thinking about computer repair (which is not a lie!) and that you first want to see what you'd have to agree to.
I hope that helps!

There are only a couple things that could cause this, UNLESS THE MONITOR WAS PHYSICALLY DAMAGED BY THE FALL.
- Look for a button on the monitor that will bring up the settings menu. Look for something along the lines of 'factory reset' or 'restore defaults.'
- If the computer is a desktop, check the video cable connection at the monitor and at the computer. Make sure that both are securely screwed down.
- If the computer is a laptop on a docking station, make sure that the laptop is firmly docked. You might want to shut it down, remove it from the dock and then re-dock with very firm pressure on both the left and right rear corners.
(Bad docking often causes an all pink or an all blue tint, garbled output from a local printer, bad or no network connectivity, etc.)
- If this is a desktop computer, with the video coming from an expansion card, (not onboard video), then you might want to shutdown the computer, remove the power cable, remove the video cable from the card and pop the cover. Remove and reinstall the video card, making sure that it's firmly seated.
(If the fall of the monitor caused the video cable to stretch out, it may have caused the expansion card to rise up from the slot. Some of the new 'screwless' systems for expansion cards aren't able to provide the stability that the old screw-type can.)
I hope this helps!

i got this brand new computer for graduation and it has windows 7 installed. it doesn't allow me to delete, drag, or drop icons or folders like my former computer with vista had. what should i do? trade it in for a better computer or have them install a new program or is there a settings option for the control of icons and folders? i'm no computer expert so this is beyond me. i googled windows 7 drag and drop problem and found that i'm not the only one. (link)

No sir, don't give up on it. It sounds like a permissions issue and shouldn't be all that hard to sort out. Win7 should work essentially the way that Vista did, but much more smoothly.
As with pretty much any Windows process, there are a multitude of ways to accomplish the same goal. What you run into along the way helps determine the best course of action.
Here's a good place to start. You said that you can't delete a folder the way things are now.
ASSUMING THAT YOU'RE NOT TRYING TO DELETE A SYSTEM FOLDER, do the following to test my permissions theory:
- Go to Start and enter the following into the search box: %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe
Without even hitting Enter, that will bring up explorer.exe at the top of the menu:
- Right click explorer.exe and choose "Run as Administrator" from the menu. Click Yes to the prompt(s) that follow, allowing the action.
- Now try to delete the (non-system) folder that you couldn't delete before. I'm guessing that you will be able to.
Fixing this may be as simple as the following, but it should be noted that increasing the allowed permissions of an account may also increase the security risk for a less aware user.
Also, you may be logging into a Standard user account, where you might have the option of using another account with increased rights.
- Go to Start and enter in "user" to bring up the option of User Accounts on the menu. Click on User Accounts.
- Click Change Your Account TYPE
- See if your account is set as Standard or Administrator. (I'm guessing that it's Standard.) If it's Administrator, then fixing the broader permissions issue is slightly more complex.)
I hope this helps, or at least gets you on the right track.

There are a couple things that might have gone wrong, but the first is definitely to check your settings.
Assuming that you have an external card, (if you don't, there will be no choice), make sure that the configuration is correct.
If you DO have a card:
Menu -> Options -> Store Pictures -> On Media Card

If your harddrive(s) is good, if this is not a harddrive hardware failure, it's not a big deal to recover.
Bypassing solutions that could be employed to attempt repair of your operating system, let's jump ahead and focus on data recovery.
The easiest thing would be to remove your harddrive, and knowing what type it is, (IDE or SATA), get a USB or Firewire enclosure that will work with it. I have MACALLY enclosures and have found them to be excellent. There are many other good ones, though.
(Buy.com or Newegg.com are excellent online sources, and you might find enclosures on the shelves of Best Buy, Staples, or whatever other retail store might carry this sort of thing.)
With the drive in an enclosure, you then have a few choices. You can just hang on to it that way until you have a new PC, and hook it up to copy over your data to that new computer.
You can also hook up the enclosure to a host machine and either burn the data to DVDs, or copy it to a flash drive that's large enough to hold it all.
In the end, you'll have this spare drive in an enclosure that you can use for backups, additional storage, data transfer, etc.
I hope that helps!
