My name's Kirstin, and I'm 15. I'll be a sophomore in the fall. I play field hockey and softball, so i'm familiar with high school sports and things that happen on and off the field with them. I've gone through a lot of sports related things, so feel free to ask anything about them, even if it seems weird. I'm very laid back, and tend to be a realist. Ask whatever you want.

Join a gym, and ask the trainers there about it. Most high schools has a Student Athletic Training program that is all volunteer, but aimed at kids who would like to learn athletic training.

Hey...
Well im a beginner in field hockey and i just recently took a camp, and am hoping to try out for the team next year at school... and I need a stick so i was wondering for those who have played what they would recommend; for instance what brands that are good and which to avoid. Also since i am a beginner i dont want to spend like 200$ on a stick so make it reasonable like under 60$.
thanks!

I've played field hockey for 4 years now. I would definetly recommend TK or Grays. If you're absolutely brand new to the sport, i would recommend STX. Once you've inproved you stick skills and become more advanced in the sport, i would buy a stick to match your ability. Brands like Gryphon and all composite sticks are for more advanced players. Composite also has a different feel on the ball than a wood stick. I would highly recommend a wood stick to begin with. www.Longstreth.com has a great selection. Personally, i would go to their store because they usually have a bigger selection and sales there, but i don't know where you live. The retail store is in PA. Also, keep in mind that unless you are 6 feet tall, you don't really need a 37' stick. I would go with 35' or 36'. A shorter stick will also keep you lower when you play, which is very good. Grays sticks are normally heavier than other brands. Beginner stick are usually $20 to about $40, while others can reach $150. Keep you eye on the lower priced ones. Also remember that the color of the stick doesn't really matter, so make your decision based more on how well you can use it.

I've played field hockey for 4 years now. I also go to a school that has 3 state championships in the sport, so we are a bit hardcore about it. I would just run. Run sprints, and run distance. Also, work on your stick skills. Speed dribbling, left to right stick skills, and such. You might want to try going to a gym and lifting as well. don't forget about the plyo's either..

i have an 11 year old sister who asked me to write here. she has alaways been really atletic, but has never found a sport just for her. can you guys please write abouts sports you like, what type of people they are for, and some info on it. please exclude soccer and basketball (link)

Try sports like field hockey, lacrosse, or softball. But keep in mind that if your sister really like a girly-girl type, these sports might not be for her. Any type of girl can play softball, and become amazing at it with practice. Field hockey is a great sport. It requires a lot of dedication, and is very skill based. Lacrosse is a big running sport, but still involves a lot of strategy. A lot of people play soccer, so i would definetly suggest a sport that isn't as mainstream like the 3 i mentioned above.

i've been playing softball since i was about 4 (T-ball then) and now im 13. i recently tried out for a travel team, but didnt make it. i've always been a great athlete and great softball player. im totally upset i didnt make it. what can i do to make me get over the fact that i didnt make it? .. ps - im gonna go to mostly all the games because my twin sister made it. please help. its kinda stupid but ive always been told not to cry about little things like this :-/ (link)

Firstly, don't take it too hard. I know it hurts because i've been there too. Don't be too hard on yourself for not making it. Go to a softball camp or clinic over the summer or during whatever season you can. Trust me, it helps. Next season when you tryout for the team, make sure you have confidence and keep your head up. Just play your game, and don't worry about the other girls or coaches watching you. It also helps if you tryout for more than one team. Even if you don't make one, you'll most likely make the other. And don't forget the reason that you play the sport in the first place, to have fun.
