Hey, I'm Melody! I've been giving advice on and off since 2003. I'm a 23 year old military wife, expecting a baby boy in August, and working on my Bachelor's degree. :)

Oh, and ask me anything!

Advice

i went to the doctor and got a pap smear and my doctor said i have a yeast infection, but i have never had any itching or bad discharge or anything that seemed unusual...im very confused by this

A yeast infection isn't a big deal. Use an over the counter medicine for it and it will be fine. It may be so minor you didn't even realize you had one. Don't fret over it. Just take the medicine and forget about it. :)

How do I learn to handle alcohol better? I hate the taste, it makes me gag and I can get drunk after to Mike's Hards. Its ridiculous, I hate being the girl at the party that can't shoot whiskey or play beer pong because the tastes make me hurl immediately. Or the one that throws up and passes out after a couple of drinks! I want to at least be able to handle a party well. Anyone else have this problem? Is it because of my weight being smaller than some?

Female: 118lbs/ 22yrs old.

I have only had alcohol a few times but I am the same way. I never have to worry about being a drunk, because I cannot stand the way it tastes. You can't force yourself to like it. No one does. Consider it a good thing. You just deal with it, I guess.

Your weight can have a lot to do with why you can't handle alcohol well. The lower your weight, the lower your tolerance for alcohol. Eat while you drink. That will help you tolerate it better. Pace yourself as well. Have a drink, once the tipsy feeling wears off, have another. You will be able to better assess how drunk you are getting to keep you from getting wasted. You know your limit. Drink lots of water to keep yourself hydrated. That will keep you from getting a hangover.

Drink responsibly :)

My boyfriend and I broke up because of stress being put on him by his family which caused us not to see each other much and although I tried to understand, I was still hurt by us never getting to spend time together. Now we are broken up but still good friends. I think taking time off from the relationship has helped us. He said he would like to "try again" when his family issues are resolved, but I don't know how long that will be and I really miss us being together. How can I convince him I want to help and not hinder? I just want us to be able to be more than friends again...

Have you ever seen John Tucker Must Die? If you have maybe you see the connection? If not he had excuses for why he couldn't be "official" with his girlfriends too. I am not saying there is a correlation between this and your relationship, but I can't help but wonder.

If you guys still see each other now, why wouldn't he date you? It stinks that he is having family problems, but why does that mean he can't still be with you? It makes no sense. Think about it.

Tell him you have reached a point where being just friends isn't good enough. If he gives excuses or says maybe one day but not right now, you know he's full of it.

So i'm a 16 year old girl and i haven't had sex, i have however let my boyfriend go down on me but i took the necessary precautions to ensure he was clean, doc records etc. recently i switched body soaps to a cranberries scented Dial soap and my inner labia itch like not horribly but enough to call attention. I've had it for two days but i dont really have an unusual discharge and i dont really notice a strange smell. i applied vagisil and it stopped it for a good while but it did come back. I told my mom and she said since it doesnt burn when i pee and i dont have the symptoms of a yeast infection its probably not what i have. She said just apply the cream and the irritation will go away eventually. Can a girl get random vaginal irritation for a few days or is my mom just wrong? should i push for yeast infection medication? or possibly a doctors appointment for an otherwise mild itch that once in awhile kicks it up a notch for a like second?

If you think it's a yeast infection, then buy yourself some medication for it. Your mother and I can make assumptions, but only YOU know what's going on down below.

The person that answered before me is probably right. More than likely you are having a mild allergic reaction to the soap you are using. I am very sensitive to scented soaps, and my gynocologist has advised me to never use them. Now all I use is Dove body wash unscented.

There are tests to determine what kind of infection you may or may not have and you can get them over the counter. You take it just like you would take a pregnancy test. You should be able to buy them over the counter just about anywhere.

so, i've had a flaky scalp for a while now. and i've tried every single possible dandruff shampoo possible, nothing works. even selsun blue. like i said, I'VE TRIED IT ALL.

but the weird thing about my dandruff, there isn't much flakes so much as there are egg looking things. but i KNOW FOR A FACT i don't have lice, because i've had lice before. and i would have been itching really really badly. but i don't know how else to explain the stuff in my hair.

does anyone have any at home remedies that i could do? for someone on a budget? thanks.

I experienced the same thing last winter, and am starting to once again experience the same thing. Since it's winter, the air is very dry, making your scalp dry as well. The 'dandruff' is just patches of dry skin flaking off. I also tried everything, and sadly enough nothing worked. You could try what Tina said, but nothing worked for me. It just went away on it's own after winter.

I have been a thumb sucker my whole life. My New Years resolution is to quit it for good. I am going to go cold turkey. If that doesn't work, what else can I do to help me quit?

First you have to assess why you suck your thumb. Does it help you cope with stress? If so you need to find healthier outlets to deal with it, like chewing gum or keeping your hands busy with something else.

If you simply suck your thumb out of habit, put something on your thumb to act as a trigger to stop you from doing it. Like a bandaid, chili powder, or tobasco sauce.

Keep telling yourself you are an adult now and it's time to start acting like one. How will you tell your children not to suck their thumbs when you do? Keep yourself motivated and you will succeed :) Make it your New Year's Resolution.

what can an abnormal pap smear mean? my doctor called and said that i need to go back and talk with her, but i cant make an appointment for a few weeks...i am freaking out because i dont know what that could mean?

It's never good to have an abnormal pap smear. It could mean a number of things, and it's important you get toy our doctor to discuss the issue as soon as possible. Smartone gave you a link for reference, but just be sure to get to the doctor sooner rather than later.

So my boyfriend never pays for me, like when we go out to eat or out to the movies. It's not like he doesnt have the money, im pretty sure he does. Anyway, I dont really care, but my parents are so judgemental, they think that its only appropriate for a guy to at least offer. what do i do? I wouldnt let him pay for everything, of course, but it would make me feel better if he offered. Opinions?

There is no easy way to approach this situation. More than likely this will end up with everyone feeling awkward. If it doesn't bother you that he doesn't pay, then leave it be. Don't do something about it just because your parents want you to. It's ultimately your relationship, and if you risk bringing this up, you run the risk of having an awkward relationship.

Maybe he really doesn't have the money. Does he work? Does he have a lot of stuff to pay for? Maybe he isn't as old fashioned as you or your parents. If you do want to do something about it, start off slow. Next time he invites you out somewhere, tell him you would love to go but have no money at the time. Then see if he offers.

If you know for a fact that he has the money, maybe you could "accidently" forget your wallet next time you go out. If he offers to pay, and if he has the money he definitely should, then say something along the lines of how sweet you thought it was that he payed. Milk it. Coo over how romantic you think it was and how you and your parents had always been old fashioned and it meant a lot to you that he paid. Stuff like that. But just to be prepared for the worst case scenario, bring your wallet. If he doesn't have the money to pay for you, you can sigh with full relief when it "shows up" in the bottom of your purse. ;)

Good luck!

I am studying abroad in China for college... I need any tips or suggestions for going to China.

Can I use my phone?
An adaptor/converter for electronics?
Certain colors to wear or not wear?
Is there a variety of american food to eat there?
Friendly?
Clean?

Those are just some ideas, any tips are welcome

I have never been to China so I can't speak first hand, but I thought I would just add a few common sense tips for you.

As previously mentioned, study their culture, language, and way of life. That's very important if you want to fit in. Buy books, research online, and study their history as well.

I am sure you can use your phone. China is a very advanced country, so any technology concerns you have shouldn't be an issue. Consider a long distance plan if you don't have one already. It shouldn't matter what colors you wear, and there will be plenty of American food there, I am sure.

As far as the atmosphere, (clean/dirty, friendly/mean) I am once again sure that it is the same as any other place you would go. Some people will be friendly, others will be mean. Some places will be clean, other places will be dirty. Just make sure not to get lost. Know the tourist attractions and try sticking to them until you get comfortable.

Keep pepper spray with you at all times. That is very important. Locals can probably scope out a tourist from a mile away, and any of them could take advantage of you. I have heard not to eat the watermelon there. I don't know why, or the story behind it, but it's always worth knowing. :)

Although you are going to study, I am sure you are going to want to have fun as well. Be safe. Don't give anyone you don't know directions to where you are staying, and don't go anywhere alone with anyone. If you have sex, use protection and use caution. But have fun! This is an exiting experience and you should take full advantage of it! :)

Anyone know the song that was playing
on the second episode of Teen Mom when
Ryan came home and found the note on the
bed?

Please say the artist and name of the song

Laura already answered your question, but I thought I would add that the mtv website actually has the playlist for each episode. Just a future reference :)

Okay, I need help finding a book.

I have a friend, he's a guy, 18, and he's super smart but he doesn't like to read. I want to change that, because I think he would love reading if he found the right book. He'll read non-fiction, but that's about it. I love fiction novels, and I think he would too if he gave them a chance.

So i'm looking for a novel thats:
1. Not too long... preferably not longer than 400 pages.
2. FICTION
3. In the history or mystery genre... preferably both.
4. Award winner or finalist. (Not necessary, but those are usually the really good books.)

I want something that will make him love fiction, so any ideas would be wonderful and much appreciated.

Have him try a Lisa Scottoline book. I have only read one (Daddy's Girl) but it was a quick and easy read. Quite a page-turner too, so I think one of them would be a good fit.

Dean Koontz is a fantastic author. All of his books are great, so I would definitely suggest any of them. Try James Patterson too.

Good luck :)

It's so embarassing. My mom's old, 63 with grey hair. And I am 13 years old. I have a brother whose 27 years old. My frends keep asking me "Oh, thats a really big gap between you and you brother. Why is that?" Its so embarassing. I feel bad.

Instead of chastizing your mother for having you at an advanced age, bless her for giving birth to you at all. Without that woman you wouldn't be here right now to ask this question. Be blessed you have a family and cherish them while you can. They won't always be there.

If someone asks why there is such a gap between you and your brother ask why their isn't such a gap between their siblings. They probably won't know the answer any more then you did.

I'm 16, getting my driver's license at the end of December, and I've been wrestling for a while over whether or not to be an organ donor. When I got my learner's permit I opted not to be one, but a license is more permanent and I don't want to make too hasty of a decision just because the idea seems morbid. So, any thoughts? Should I be an organ donor or not? Thank youu.

I am an organ donor. When the DMV asked me if I wanted to be a donor I didn't even really think about it, I just said yes. At first I sort of regretted my decision because I thought they took all of that stuff out of you when you died anyway, and when I found out they didn't I became a little sick at the thought.

Now that I have had time to think about it I don't regret my decision at all. If I could save even one life after the loss of my own what incentive would I have not to donate? I won't need those organs anymore. You shouldn't let anyone influence your decision either way. Those are your body parts and it is your decision alone to decide what you want to do with them. I know a lot of people who are donors and a lot of people who aren't. Everyone has different opinions and reasons for why they choose what they choose, so you will have to figure it out on your own. :)

So instead of getting normal gifts for each other for the holidays, my best friend and I have decided to make each other posters for our dorm rooms next year at college. I used red poster board and cut it into a heart to start with. It's not terribly big, so should I make the photos smaller and just print them instead of getting them developed? I want to put a lot of stuff on it and my printer can make smaller quality prints. I don't know what else to add though? I was thinking of cutting out sayings from magazines. I also wanted to get her a couple of side gifts that pertain to college. I was going to buy a pair of flip flops and write 'shower shoes' on them haha. What else could I make for her that would be useful in college? Thanks. - 17/f

Everything sounds great for the poster. For the side gifts, consider making a gift basket. The flipflops are a great idea. Try some small snacks (popcorn, chips, candies) for late night study sessions, Burt's Bees lip balm, hand salve, etc, fleece blanket, you get the idea.

You can google this and find lots of things.

I'm having a candy themed sweet 16 next month and I wanna wear a cocktail dress but my mom doesn't want me to because all my guests will probably be in cocktail dresses. What do you suggest I wear then?:)

xoxoxoxoxo

If everyone is wearing cocktail dresses then you should wear a simple floor length evening gown. Nothing too fancy, but something that will make you stick out from everyone else.

Okay, so I've known this guy, Matt, since I was in the 6th grade--I'm in the 10th grade now. We've never really spoken to each other until this year, but I used to like him in Jr. High. This year it seems like we are becoming really good friends--which is a good thing. At first I thought he was starting to like me, but now I'm just confused. Whenever it's just me and him and our two other friends, he's all flirty and touchy feely with me. But when we're at school it's like I'm not even alive (the only place he'll kinda sorta talk to me at school is in study hall). All ast night he was finding someway to make contact with me, sit by me and we held hands (not for very long) and I thought it ment something. It did mean something for me, but I'm not sure what it meant for him. Later I had a dream about him and I and I really liked it. Now, I think I'm regaining those feelings for him again. I find myself thinking "If Matt were here, I bet he'd say this. . ." or "I wonder what Matt is doing. . ." or anything to do with him. My question is, why is he acting all flirty when it's just us and than like I'm not even alive when all of those pretty blonde girls (one used to be one of my best friends but turned into a jerk). Should I let myself start liking him again or should I just get over it? The more and more I think about him, the more I wish he were with me. Please help!!

I don't mean to bring down the second advice giver, no more than the second advice giver means to put down the first advice giver...however a sophomore can very much so be a player. Trust me! I am 18 now, but definitely remember what it was like when I was your age. My boyfriend was a big player. (and by the way, you don't have to have sex to be a player) Toying with different girls feelings is being a player. Point blank.

We cannot tell you whether or not he likes you or not. All we can do is tell you to ask him yourself. You need to know, because if he does like you then perhaps something could form from this. If he doesn't, it's better to know now instead of waiting until your feelings get stronger.

Good luck.

I have a HUGE research paper that's required to pass my english class this semester. I have to come up with an A+ worthy thesis for my paper on how Hamlet is a thinker versus being a doer. also if you have any refrences to good sources I could quote in my paper that would be very very helpful! thank you!

"Had Hamlet been able to act quickly upon the information that Claudius murdered his father, then only Claudius would have died (in theory), rather than the entire Danish royal family. But then, Hamlet wouldn't be much of a tragedy, would it?"

That quote came from an answer to your question that I found on google. If you google you will find plenty of answers! Just make sure to cite them in the format your teacher wants.

Also use sparknotes.
