Q: I am female, 20 years old. I play volleyball for a smaller college, but it is still very competitive. I am 5'11 and about 170lbs. I dont consider myself fat, but I am not as skinny as I would like to be. I am muscular, which makes up for a lot of my weight, especially in my legs.
This summer I really want to be in the best shape I have ever been in, before going into preseason for volleyball which is at the beginning of august.

I really need some advice on what kinds of work outs I should be doing since our coach didn't really give us much to go on. I want to lose some weight, and just really be in great shape. I am a member at snap fitness gym, open 24 hours a day. it has the basic work out equipment, but no classes or pool or anything fancy like the bigger gyms. i am also playing in a sand volleyball league. I don't know what else to do. I would really like to lose weight in my thighs and stomach mainly.

Dieting is hard for me to do because i still live with my parents and i have to eat the food they give me. my mom cooks dinner, and it is usually healthy. during the day I am on my own for breakfast and lunch.

can someone please give me some guidelines or suggestions? sorry this was so long!

i'm not suggesting this if you don't like it but the slim fast diet worked really well for me. It consists of having 2 slim fast meals a day and 3 snacks (fruit, veggies, or 100 calorie pack), and then a 500 calorie meal. I'm not suggesting you do this if you don't like it. I'm just saying that it's worked for me. If not, just try something different than what you are doing now for breakfast and lunch. I don't know what you are having, but just switch to healthier alternatives. Like, instead of chips, eat fruit. Instead of white bread, eat whole wheat bread. instead of regular pasta, eat whole wheat pasta. and as for carbs, I would suggest that you replace rice and pasta with sweet potato. Those pounds will just come flying off. Drink plenty of water. Vitimin Water Zero is also really good and has no sodium.

As for exercise. Do LESS weights with more reps. What I would recommend is holding 6-8 pound weights and doing squats, maybe 3 sets of 15 or 20. That will slim down your legs, if that is what you want. I hope I helped. If you need any other information, feel free to message me. I'd be more than happy to help with any other questions you may have :)

thank you!

I started this column when I was 15 years old, so you'll notice that the advice has gotten better and better. I've always been interested in counseling and I started this column to gain experience. But, I found a lot more than that. I found a support system of caring and loving people. I received a degree in child development and currently working towards becoming a school psychologist. So, I hope you can feel confident in trusting me with your questions. This is more than just a fun site for me. I look back on my own questions from years ago, and I laugh when I read about my problems at 16. I've really come a long way! I'm relatively young, but I've had several experiences in life that have aided me in helping others. I hope to use those experiences for the greater good and help others who are not in their ideal situation!
