What does repent mean? Does it mean to ask for forgiveness?

Repent means to turn away. God calls us to repent of our sins. It's not simply feeling bad, although that is and should be an emotional response, it's turning and then moving in another direction. If someone truly repents to God, He/she WANTS to turn away from his/her old sinful lifestyle. It's a heart change. And once the heart changes, the behavior soon follows.
The heart is what God is ALWAYS concerned about. He promises to forgive those who repent. True repentance requires a change in heart. Saying you're sorry and asking for forgiveness without meaning it is not true repentance.
