debtors prisons in america

what were debtor's prisons like in America? Were they harsh environments where people were treated badly or abused?.. or was it just sort of like jail today?

thats a really wierd way to ask that last part. heres an interpretation: were they treated badly and abused, or was it like jail today, in which they're treated badly, abused, and raped?

anyways, hell yeah it was bad, it was prison. forced labor and such. search it on wikipedia.
